GEO Audit: See Whether Generative AI Can Find Your Business
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. A GEO audit checks whether AI answer tools can understand, retrieve, support, and recommend a business when it genuinely fits the request.
No acronym soup
A GEO audit is an AI findability check.
Traditional search asks whether a page can rank. A GEO audit also asks whether an AI system can use the business in a useful answer.
That requires more than repeating keywords. The business needs a clear identity, pages that answer real buying questions, proof that supports its claims, and outside sources that describe the same company consistently.
"Can someone find this page in search results?"
"Can an AI answer explain when this business is a good choice and support that recommendation?"
What belongs in the audit
Five layers matter more than one magic file.
- 1
Technical access
Important pages should be crawlable, indexable, canonical, readable without fragile interactions, and connected through the sitemap and internal links.
- 2
Entity clarity
The site should consistently name the business, category, services, audience, locations, people, credentials, and contact details.
- 3
Answer-ready pages
Service, use-case, comparison, proof, methodology, and FAQ content should answer the questions buyers actually ask.
- 4
External evidence
Reviews, reputable directories, associations, media, partner pages, and customer stories help verify what the company says about itself.
- 5
Live answer checks
Relevant customer questions should be tested and saved with the answer, competitors, citations, date, and provider used.
Important distinction
An llms.txt file is useful context, not a visibility strategy.
A clear llms.txt can summarize important pages for systems that choose to read it. It does not force a model to crawl, cite, rank, or recommend the business.
The stronger foundation is still a useful website: direct language, distinct pages, specific proof, accurate structured information, strong internal links, and credible mentions elsewhere.
